Jon Covington, President/CEO of The Jon Covington Group, is a West Michigan native/resident who’s traveled the world while working in radio, television, and film.
Jon has produced and moderated various political debates. He’s also created and spearheaded multiple campaigns geared toward empowering the Urban core of the community.
Jon had the opportunity to live and work in South Africa for several months on a project with Academy Award Nominee, Terrence Howard, and Academy Award-winning actress, Jennifer Hudson. South Africa was the number one place he had dreamed about visiting since high school when he wrote a book report on apartheid and South African anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela.
Under the umbrella of the Jon Covington Group, Jon has worked on and/or created a myriad of campaigns/projects for various companies, including BET (Television Network), Gatorade, and the iparticipate campaign spearheaded by Michelle Obama. He’s interviewed the likes of Chris Brown, Motown Founder-Berry Gordy, Fantasia, Ciara, Gladys Knight, Al Sharpton, and a host of others in the sports/entertainment arena. He’s taken his motivational speaking all over the country, including college campuses, and prisons. Jon has also been responsible for rebranding churches, and entire school districts.
Jon is the founder of M.O.C.I.T.I (mokeetee), a service-based organization comprised of “Men Of Color In The Industry” of entertainment based in Los Angeles, CA. He is also the founder of Men of Color Read (MOCR), an elementary school literacy initiative he launched in Los Angeles over a decade ago. MOCR also currently exists in Muskegon County, as well as Kent county in partnership with the Kent District Library.
In addition to many honors over the years, Jon was recently the 2019 recipient of the Charles H. Hackley Commendation for Service to the Humanities Award in Michigan for his outstanding contributions to the humanities and arts.
Having worked for several years on various initiatives championing the health, and well-being of the African American male, Jon created the documentary, “Black Man”. The documentary looks through a kaleidoscope of raw, riveting, and candid conversations with black men ages 21 to 91 living in West Michigan, about their lives, their loves, their losses, their longings, their America unlike we’ve seen on screen. Prior to COVID-19, the film was being applauded at screenings around the country.
